“The Lord is near. Don’t be anxious about anything; rather, bring up all of your requests to God in your prayers, along with giving thanks. Then the peace of God that exceeds all understanding will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:5 – 7
Breathe. Breathe deeply. I just came out of a staff meeting, and this is what we came up with as our theme for this time and turning to all the upcoming preparations for seasons of stewardship and Advent. Make breathing, deep breaths, my prayer. Breathing out my requests to God, along with my thanks. Breathing in the peace of God that exceeds all understanding, the kind of peace that I cannot conjure up on my own. We live in an anxiety-driven, fear-mongering kind of atmosphere. It is in the air we breathe, the messages that there is a scarcity of resources, a scarcity of security, a scarcity of safety, and compassion. Yet God has not changed. God, who brought water out of a rock, a little bread gathering on the ground, God who spreads a banquet table of peace and hope in the presence of the enemies with fear and anxiety at their lips. Maybe those “enemies” will sit down with me at the table and will not be so fearsome when we sit down together and realize such a banquet of love. Breathe. “From now on, brothers and sisters, if anything is excellent and if anything is admirable, focus your thoughts on these things: all that is true, all that is holy, all that is just, all that is pure, all that is lovely and beautiful. Practice these things.” Philippians 4:8
