.whoever wishes to be first among you must be your servant. Mark 10:44

I want to be first. I want to be noticed, be rewarded. I want to belong. Sometimes I believe I have a servant-like way of being, and then I realize what privilege I live with; what control I desire; and what expectations I hold of how my life will be and how people will respond to me. Jesus’ teaching, that we read here in Mark’s Gospel, is in response to James and John asking Jesus if they can sit at his right and at his left in his glory. Jean Vanier, the founder of L’Arche Communities where persons with disabilities and persons without disabilities live together, writes, “We all have, as human beings, a design that teaches us to reach out to others, and not only to serve ourselves. If we listen to this inner design, this inner voice, it will always lead us to do what is right.” The voice of a servant. Keep listening. It’s there.
