“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth…” (Revelation 21:1)

John, the author of Revelation, writes a vision of change, of complete transformation made real by the indwelling presence of God. “Look, God’s dwelling place is now among the people.” (Revelation 21:3b) Yet, it seems such a struggle. The forces working against John’s vision are so great. The day after mid-term elections and we can let out a sigh, yet the struggle continues to hang on to such a vision. We need encouragement from one another. Connection with each other. Prayer for each other. Each of your names come to my mind as I pray this morning. You pass through my prayer.

At a lunch meeting yesterday, someone asked me how I would describe the Holy Spirit. He and the person next to him were discussing the question. I answered that I like to think of the Holy Spirit as the breath of God, the breath of life, of love. The Holy Spirit takes my prayers of your names on my breath. Our breathing together the Spirit of God will bring about John’s vision. “The One who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then the One said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (Revelation 21:5) Amen.
