“They don’t belong to this world, just as I don’t belong to this world. Make them holy in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.”
John 17:16-18

The last part of the long chapter from the book of John that is Jesus’ good-bye discourse to the followers. We don’t belong to this world and yet we are sent into this world. Made holy in the truth. Strange stuff. Reminiscent of my growing up years in the church and being taught about missionaries. Missionaries are the ones sent into the world, foreign worlds, carrying the truth to other people who did not have it. Yet, here I am. Here we are, in this world that we don’t belong to, set apart, called, chosen, and then plunked right back in to wipe tears and make dinners and take care of our families, our parents, our friends, go to work and come back home, often forgetting that I’m a missionary, an evangelist, that I’m holy. Yet I am. And you are. And together we are the holy church, living out the truth of love in this world. Blessings.
