He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had case out seven demons.” Mark 16:9

Our Face of Faith for this coming Sunday is Mary Magdalene. I wonder if Mary of Magdala (Mary Magdalene) made a little altar at the place where she heard and met the risen Jesus? I think that I might have wanted to remember, to have a place to return to when the life got tough; when demons that Jesus cast out, began returning. The Gospel writers tell us that Jesus had cast out seven demons from Mary. I bet if I start counting, I could have more than seven demons: resentment, wanting to lash out when people don’t believe my witness or life experience; taking out my anger on undeserved loved ones when life isn’t “fair”; asking “Why me?” In one minute I can come up with quite a few demons. Then again, maybe Mary did not want to make an altar to come back and remember. Maybe she cherished her knowledge of Jesus’ love so deeply within her that to make an altar would bring back memories of her demons rather than the memory of Jesus speaking her name, that voice she could not forget.
