February 7 Edevotional

I often wake up in the morning with a song playing on repeat in my head. It’s often a hymn, a result, I believe, of having grown up in a church where the Psalter Hymnal was our only song book. This morning the song is, “Jesus calls us, o’er the tumult, of our life’s wild, restless sea. Day by day his sweet voice soundeth, saying ‘Christian, follow me.’ Old language for saying that each day, if I listen closely enough, there is the sound of a call, my call, from Jesus, from God, from the Spirit, inviting me to follow the way of love. I once heard someone give a small story of this kind of call. It is like a musician playing and singing a piece a music and forgetting the words or forgetting the notes, and there is their loved one sitting close behind them, whispering over their shoulder, “This is the note. These are the words.”

I pray you hear that voice whispering over your shoulder, and that you are able to hear it over the dull roar of your life’s wild, restless sea.
