Genesis 50:15-21

This past Sunday we ended the book of Genesis with part of the reading of the Joseph story. Joseph’s brothers come to him in Egypt where he has come to an immense place of power, after those same brothers sold Joseph into slavery, to get rid of him. Joseph uses his power in manipulative ways over his brothers, succumbing to the temptation that anyone with such power and privilege has, to use the power in selfish ways. We watch how Joseph transforms his heart and soul in relationship with his brothers and finally in this reading from the ending chapter of Genesis when Joseph’s brothers again come to him with fear that now their father is dead, Joseph will decide to pay them back for what they did to him. Joseph’s words to his brothers, “Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of God? Have no fear, I myself will provide for you and your little ones.” (Genesis 50:19 and 21) Joseph has learned who he is in relationship with God and how he is called and set apart by God to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. Help us with our privilege and power to do the same.

Next Sunday we begin the Exodus cycle and Moses’ story.
