“Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and John baptized him the Jordan River. While he was coming up out of the water, Jesus saw heaven splitting open and the Spirit, like a dove, coming down on him. And there was a voice from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I dearly love; in you I find happiness.’” Mark 1:9 – 11
God is transitioning. God is the great innovator. Wait…I thought that God is the one stability of life, never-changing, always remaining the same. Yet, we see throughout the Scriptures that God changes God’s mind, God relents, God forgives, God is love in relationship, and healthy, loving relationships call for transitioning, innovation, and change. God in Jesus entered into the flesh of our humanity, changing, evolving, growing, transitioning.
God is the great innovator, and God calls humanity into participation and partnership in that innovation. Fundamentally, we are not in control. That is the God we see and experience in Jesus the Christ, the presence of God in the flesh. Jesus came out to John the Baptist to be baptized by John for the repentance of sin. Jesus took on our flesh with all of our wounds, mistrust, fear, broken relationships, lies, greed, our gender complexity, the gift of our sexuality. God in Jesus, got down into the River Jordan to have all of it changed. The skies were ripped apart and God sent God’s Spirit the moment Jesus rose up out of the water, God’s wild, free, changing Spirit. A thunderous, joyous voice came through the ripped open sky and claimed this child as God’s own.
Remember your baptism, your transitioning, your changing as God’s own, and be thankful!
